Ebola In Atlanta
By: April Fowler
Ebola virus could is on American soil. Imagine you waking up one morning feeling slightly under the weather and days later you’re diagnosed with Ebola virus, this what thousands of people in South Africa are dealing with every day. This is a disease that has no cure known to date, even though it is an epidemic disease. The Ebola virus is one that causes bleeding inside and outside of the body. No Americans have been in contact with this disease until Brantly and Writebol came in contact with it while doing missionary work in Africa over the past year. Coming back to the states on August 2nd to a hospital where you are isolated from others and treated like a guinea pig, because don’t have a definite way to cure you at the time. Doctors later had some idea of what medication they could use: ZMapp.
ZMapp is a medication primarily for primates. Tests have been done on monkeys that have shown greatly improved immune systems. Knowing that primate’s immune systems are different than ours the doctors decided to give it a try. According to CNN News, once the medication was given to Brantly and in a matter of an hour he was showing great improvement and was able to get up and take a shower on his own. Could this possibly be a cure?
The two patients who were recently infected with Ebola were released from Emory University hospital August 21st. With numerous test and treatments they now show no sign of symptoms, and doctors believe that they are fully recovered from the Ebola virus and have a long life ahead of them. The patients had to go through two blood test that must come back negative each time in order to be declared cured.
Coming from isolated hospital walls to the freedom of everyday life, Brantly and Writebol are now free and enjoying life. The families are grateful for all the time the doctors, nurses, hospital staff, and others have taken to the focus on the health of their loved ones. Even though they are cured of this disease many are skeptical to if they are truly back to normal. A few of our fellow Rams were asked what they thought about this story.
Khaiwa Rowe 11th grader: “They should let them stay in the hospital until they were cured for sure.”
Morgan Ferebee 10th grader:” I was surprised that they actually made a vaccine that was able to cure them, but I am cautious about them being in Atlanta, since they aren’t really cured just because they don’t show any signs or symptoms.”
Ms.Hunt was asked what she thought about the releasing of the Ebola patients and she came with a different approach by saying “I’m fine with it. I’m actually glad the Atlanta has the resources to treat them.”
As you can see, the release of the Ebola patients has to different opinions and not everyone is against it yet everyone isn’t comfortable. We should continue to be careful and cautious, yet happy for the patients and their families.
