Broken Home Doesn’t Mean Broken Life
Ryani Durham
For most of your life, you live with your mom, dad, and maybe a sibling or two. That’s pretty much all you know. Then one day, your parents leave your seemingly happy home, married, and come back hours later. Only this time when they come back, they sit you down, and tell you that they’re divorced. I know you’ve heard the word before, but it was always linked with someone else, with another family. You never thought that word would creep into your family. Everything starts moving in slow motion. When you come back to real time, you don’t know exactly how you feel. Sad, hurt, confused or maybe all three.
At one point in life, you might have heard the stereotype that kids who come from divorced parents are often juvenile delinquents or perform terribly in school or even in life. For some kids, that cliche holds very true, but for others, it’s nothing more than a hackneyed idea. Many students here at Arabia Mountain come from broken homes but they flourish just fine.
Senior Taylor Ward’s parents divorced when she was 10 years old. She could have chosen to give up on life and her future after the devastating life change but she did the exact opposite. She has been a member of FBLA for many years and has made A/B honor roll for the past 3 years. She is also a member of the drama club and played a major role in their most recent production “Juvie”. Like Taylor, many kids can have a very successful life after something as drastic as a divorce. The choice is always yours.
